Chapter Overview

Description

In 2014, Delphine Lockwood flees a humiliating New York implosion and retreats with her mother to the Whispers, the family’s massive stone mansion on the Maine coast. Del’s refuge becomes a daily pilgrimage to her glamorous grandmother Miriam (“Mimi”), now sliding into dementia. Mimi’s memories loop obsessively around a tragic romance with her long-dead husband Theo—and around a house full of hidden doors, missing heirlooms, and whispering wind.

As the family gathers for one last Christmas, Del falls for Adam, Mimi’s young caregiver, and the Whispers turns volatile: Mimi sees strangers no one else can, objects vanish, and the past bleeds into the present through intercut chapters set in the 1940s–60s, revealing a love story forged in fire and shaped by betrayal. When Mimi disappears into the winter night and dies beneath the ice, the aftermath exposes greed, inheritance warfare, and a chilling truth: someone has been manipulating Mimi’s mind—and Del’s heart—all along.

Who Should Listen

  • Listeners who like domestic thrillers with family inheritance wars, unreliable memory, and escalating psychological dread.
  • Fans of dual-timeline stories where historical secrets directly weaponize the present.
  • Readers who enjoy “cozy setting, savage plot”: small-town coastal atmospheres, big-house mysteries, and romantic obsession gone poisonous.
