Interesting research results on whether watching fights often makes you better at fighting are attra..

A research conducted by Professor Annegret Faulkner of Princeton University has found that watching fights makes you better at fighting. The study divided male mice into three groups and trained them three times a day for eight days, 10 minutes per session. The first group fought directly against an easily beatable opponent, the second group watched the fight from behind a partition, and the third group played with mouse-shaped toys during the period. The day after the training, all three groups were asked to compete against an opponent that was difficult to beat. As a result, mice who observed the fight with mice who fought directly began attacking faster than mice who had no fighting experience and did not observe the actual confrontation. The research team also tracked the activity of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in 12 subcortical brain regions to determine whether these behavioral changes are related to changes in brain neural networks. The results suggest that watching violent situations can change the way people respond to threats, but further research is needed to confirm this.

Why a US-funded vaccine trial on babies was cancelled in Guinea-Bissau

A proposed trial of a hepatitis B vaccine on newborn babies in Guinea-Bissau has been cancelled due to accusations that it was "unethical" and "neocolonial". The trial was funded by the US, under Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, who has a history of scepticism about vaccines. It was planned to involve 14,000 newborns, with half receiving a hepatitisB vaccine shortly after birth and the other half not. Critics questioned the ethics of withholding the vaccine from some babies, particularly in one of the world's poorest countries where the infection is widespread. The trial also raised questions about whether vulnerable populations in African countries were being asked to take risks that researchers would not accept in wealthier countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the trial would withhold an intervention already proven to protect newborns against hepatitis B.

Missouri Attorney General sues Lawrence County retailer, 3 others over unregulated THC products, defeats federal court challenge - United States

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway has announced lawsuits against four retailers across the state for selling illegal marijuana products disguised as legal hemp and falsely marketing themselves as licensed state dispensaries. The lawsuits were filed in state circuit courts against Puffers Choice LLC, CBD Kratom Cannabis Dispensary, and Herb Depot. The state alleges that these businesses misled consumers by advertising themselves as state-licensed dispensaries and claiming their products adhere to Missouri’s regulated cannabis testing, packaging, and safety standards. The federal court dismissed a challenge to block Missouri‘s new intoxicating cannabinoid law, paving the way for House Bill 2641 to take effect on Nov. 12, 2026.

David Jones enters voluntary administration after talks with landlords collapse - Bytes Europe

David Jones, a 188-year-old retailer, has entered voluntary administration following a breakdown in discussions with its landlords, Scentre Group, which operates Westfield malls in Australia and New Zealand. Despite efforts to restructure the company into an upmarket retailer with just 12 key stores, these proposals were rejected by at least two major property groups. The company's board voted to appoint voluntary administrators from McGrathNicol. If the company cannot be saved, these administrators aim to provide creditors and shareholders with a better financial return than could have been achieved if the company went into liquidation. David Jones posted a $4.4 million loss in its 2025 New Zealand full-year financial results, largely due to an impairment to its property leases.

Bank of England poised to hike rates for first time in 3 years

The Bank of England (BoE) is expected to raise interest rates for the first time in three years due to increasing inflation pressures from the US-Iran war. Economists predict that the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee will vote 7-2 to raise Bank Rate to 4% from 3.75%. This would be the first increase since August 2023 when inflation was over 6%. This follows a period of uncertainty over keeping rates steady. The longer the US and Iran conflict continues, the greater chance these price increases spread through the British economy. So far, there have been few signs of significant inflation effects on wage deals, with businesses predicting annual wage settlements of around 3.5% for next year and similar to 2026.
