Arunachal Pradesh: A border official's remarks cast a shadow over India-China thaw
India's border police chief, Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, stated that Chinese troops had returned to disputed areas along the Himalayan frontier in large numbers earlier this year, pitching tents several kilometres inside territory claimed by India. These comments have sparked controversy in Delhi. The dispute, which dates back to 1947, is one of India's most persistent challenges since independence and led to a brief border war in 1962. Much of the frontier remains undemarcated, with the two countries maintaining overlapping territorial claims. The last major confrontation in 2020 saw Indian and Chinese troops clash in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh, resulting in the first fatal confrontation between the two sides since 1975. After several rounds of negotiations, India and China agreed in 2024 to take steps towards easing border tensions.

New HSE guidelines highlight pregnancy terminations linked to severe pregnancy sickness
New clinical guidelines for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), which causes severe sickness and vomiting during pregnancy, have been published by the Health Service of Ireland (HSE). They suggest that women who experience HG should be routinely screened for emotional distress during and after pregnancy, and that nearly 5% of women with HG will terminate a wanted pregnancy due to the severity of symptoms. The guidelines also suggest that where indicated, psychiatric assessment and intervention should be offered to women. They recommend that doctors should refer women to a psychologist within the perinatal mental health services, which provide support for women who are experiencing moderate to severe depression during pregnancy and after giving birth, if deemed necessary. Trauma-sensitive staff training is recommended for staff interacting with women experiencing HG. The new guidelines have been welcomed by Hyperemesis Ireland, a patient organisation supporting women and families affected by the condition.

SK Hynix Surpasses TSMC in Profitability with 80% Operating Margin
SK Hynix reported an operating margin of 80% for the third quarter, surpassing TSMC for the fourth consecutive quarter, a significant increase of 33 percentage points compared to the same period last year. The company's consolidated revenue for the same quarter reached 104.6155 trillion won, with an operating profit of 83.3338 trillion won. This is the first time quarterly revenue has exceeded 100 trillion won and means that for every 100 won of products sold, approximately 80 won is profit. The gap between the two companies has widened to over 20 percentage points due to differing product and cost structures. SK Hynx has seen an increase in shipment of its sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and rising sales of high-value products aimed at data centers. However, TSMC's operating margin decreased by 1.6 percentage points from the previous quarter due to increased production costs and the burden of expanding overseas facilities.

Healey seeks to steer UK through 'difficult moment' with low-key budget
British finance minister John Healey is set to announce a cautious budget plan aimed at avoiding further bond market pressure on the new government of Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Banks, gambling firms, and online marketplaces such as Amazon and Temu are expected to be hit with higher taxes, which would help support low-income households and reduce fuel duty for drivers. The government plans to give regional mayors more control over tax revenues as part of Burnham's devolution push. Separately, over £20 billion in additional support will go to state finance institutions to stimulate investment in artificial intelligence, defence and green energy by the early 2030s. However, Healey's options are limited by the surge in borrowing costs globally, where investors remember the 2022 "mini-budget" of former Prime Minister Liz Truss and subsequent bond market meltdown triggered by its unfunded tax cuts.
