Attackers killed a nurse and severely injured a health worker responding to an Ebola alert in eastern Congo, according to the World Health Organization. The attack took place in the town of Bafwasende in the country's eastern Tshopo province. This is part of a series of attacks on health workers and responders that authorities say are hindering efforts to halt the world's fastest-growing Ebola outbreak. The country's health ministry's most recent data indicates that over 9,800 cases including over 4,700 deaths have been recorded since the start of the outbreak in May, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in Congo's history. The response to the outbreak has faced resistance from some residents who believe Ebola is a hoax. There is also widespread distrust of the government due to past outbreaks and chronic corruption.
