Reuters reports further talks between US and Myanmar government officials in Japan

The US and Myanmar government officials held secret talks in Tokyo, Japan, last week, marking the second engagement between the two sides within a month. This follows a departure from Washington's policy of avoiding contact with Myanmar authorities since 2021. The first round of talks focused on securing the release of an American businessman detained in Myanmar and combating scam operations targeting US citizens. However, these discussions have raised speculation that they could pave the way for broader geopolitical and economic discussions, including opportunities for rare earth mineral production in Myanmar. The talks were led by Michael Vance, US Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research, with at least 12 US officials participating. The US move towards engagement comes amid increasing strategic competition in the Asia-Pacific region.

Built for buffalo: A different kind of solar project at Standing Rock

Wózu Inc. had to rely on generators to power its buffalo barn on the Standing Rock Reservation after its electrical service was disconnected. Indigenized Energy, a Native-led nonprofit, developed a solar and battery system that could power the barn while providing shade for the herd. The $200,000 project included a 10-kilowatt AC solar array, the largest system allowed by the local utility. The installation was designed to generate energy for the barn, provide shade for buffalo, and withstand animals weighing as much as a car. The project supports Wózu's work in regenerative agriculture and buffalo restoration. It also places them at a growing intersection in Indian Country of agrivoltaics, or solar structures that generate energy while supporting agricultural activity beneath and around them. United Airlines Restricts Elite Status to Big Spenders

United Airlines is changing how frequent flyers qualify for its loyalty program from 2027, making spending the deciding factor for elite status. The biggest change affects Premier 1K, the airline's highest published elite tier, which will require 4,000 more qualifying points. Other tiers will maintain their existing points-only thresholds, but members will lose the alternative route that combines flight segments with a lower points total. The change is intended to simplify the airline’s loyalty program. United MileagePlus will use Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) as the measure for earning Premier status from January 1, 2027. Members will still need to take at least four flights operated by United or United Express during the qualifying year. The airline will provide a 5% head start toward 2027 status for eligible cardholders.

Malaysia 3Q26 Advance GDP Estimate - Another Positive Surprise, Yet Headwinds Ahead

Malaysia's economy expanded by +5.3% YoY in 3Q26 (2Q26: +6.0%), exceeding our forecast and Bloomberg consensus, driven by manufacturing and agriculture growth. The advance GDP estimate also exceeded our in-house forecast of +4.6% and Bloomberg's consensus of +51%. However, we remain cautious over uneven growth momentum, with growth likely to moderate further in 4Q26 due to high base effect. We expect this moderation to extend into 2027, with geopolitical tensions, trade policy uncertainty, El Niño and cost pressures impacting growth. We maintain our 2027 GDP growth forecast at +4%.
