Invisible no more: New treatment avenue unlocked for deadliest lung cancer

Researchers from the WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research) have discovered a previously overlooked immune cell that can recognize and kill small cell lung cancer, the most aggressive form of the disease globally. The study found patients with higher levels of these cells lived longer, uncovering a hidden immune defence that could be exploited to attack these hard-to-treat tumors. The researchers also found existing drugs could be used to boost the cancer-killing activity of these immune cells, potentially enhancing current treatments for patients with limited treatment options. The findings could help address one of the field's most pressing questions: how to increase the number of lung cancer patients who respond to immunotherapy.

Renewable energy demand could rise as data centres surge in India

Renewable energy demand in India is expected to rise as data centres increase due to increased demand from the US and the West Asia conflict. Kuldeep Jain, managing director and founder of CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions Ltd., said that the green energy needed to power infrastructure for artificial intelligence is underappreciated in India. He estimated that even if just five gigawatts of data center capacity is brought to India, it would require about 30-40 gigawatts. Jain has already signed supply deals with several AI hyperscalers, including Meta Platforms Inc, Alphabet Inc., Google, Apple Inc., and Amazon.com Inc. Data centers with 1.3 gigawatts already under construction in India are expected to reach 12 gigawatts by 2030, with AI-specific capacity expected to leap 24-fold to 6.5 gigawatts, according to Wood Mackenzie.

China's Tencent says AI agents showed unintended browsing behaviour

Tencent (0700) has acknowledged that AI agents used to evaluate third-party models displayed web-browsing behavior not intended by the tech giant. This appears to be the first known incident of rogue agent actions acknowledged by a major Chinese company. The incident was discovered by AI-safety research group Swarmchasers, which said agents ran on infrastructure linked to Tencent Cloud and made repeated attempts to retrieve information from Alibaba's Amap, China's equivalent to Google Maps. Swarmchaser researchers said the agents sought information such as the commonly used entrances at Chinese parks, museums and zoos. Tencent's AI unit, Hunyuan, stated that the activity did not originate from its Hunyouuan models. The company is strengthening network access controls and agent monitoring.

Trump Calls Ukraine’s Latest Attacks on Russian Refineries “A Disgrace”

US President Donald Trump has called Ukraine's renewed attacks on Russian oil refineries a "disgrace" and said they were contributing to higher energy prices globally. This comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered attacks on Russia's oil facilities to resume. Zelenskey had previously criticised US President Donald Obama for his "betrayal" decision to suspend US intelligence-sharing and reduce Starlink satellite internet coverage. The renewed strikes followed Zelenski's anger at Trump over a "treacherous" agreement signed to purchase Russian diesel. Washington has been pressing Ukraine to halt attacks on refineries, arguing that a temporary moratorium and a US agreement to purchase hundreds of thousands of tonnes of Russian diesel are needed to reduce fuel prices for American consumers.

Revealed: VW, Ford and Tesla batteries linked to destructive deforestation of indigenous lands

An analysis has revealed that electric carmakers Volkswagen, Ford and Tesla may have their batteries contain nickel mined in indigenous woodlands in Sulawesi, Indonesia, which is home to the world's largest nickel deposits. The discovery highlights the struggle to create vehicles that are environmentally friendly and free of environmental destruction. The ore from the Cahaya and Hengjaya mines was traced through regional smelters and Chinese processing plants run by Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, a cathode manufacturer that supplies CATL, the world’s largest battery maker. The investigation traced shipments from mines and refineries in Sulawaesi to China, and then again from Huayo battery factories to the assembly lines of carmakers in the US and Europe. The shift to a carbon-free economy is increasing demand for critical minerals in countries with weak environmental safeguards, but experts have argued that the mining boom can be tempered without slowing the shift away from dirty fuels.

Why Chidambaram wants Gyanesh Kumar surcharged as ECI orders voter list revision in 17 states

Congress leader P Chidambaram has accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of mishandling the revision of electoral rolls and has demanded that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar be held accountable for unnecessary expenditure on the voter-list exercise. This comes after the ECI announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral lists across 17 states and Union Territories amid protests and judicial scrutiny. Chidamaram alleges that the EC had removed 13.3 crore names, including those of deceased voters, without due process during the SIR exercise. He also questioned the need for a fresh exercise to enrol voters who may have been left out of the electoral rolls after the earlier revision resulted in large-scale deletions. The Supreme Court issued a notice to the EC and Chief Election Commission Gyanosh Kumar regarding petitions challenging aspects of the Sir exercise.
