Further tests are being conducted to determine if the cancer has spread. This is Leo's first hospitalisation since he became head of the Catholic Church in 2025. The operation is expected to take a week and raises questions about whether the pope will continue a lengthy visit to Latin America next month.

IMF chief says Saudi attacks could have negative spillover 'everywhere'
International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief, Kristalina Georgieva, has warned that recent attacks on Saudi Arabia could have negative consequences for all parties involved in the country. This comes amid concerns about the impact of the Middle East crisis on global growth, with crude prices rising since Iran effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz after it was attacked by the US and Israel in February. The IMF has also raised its 2026 global growth forecast by 0.1 percentage points to 3.1%, while it warned that poorer countries are not benefiting from rising energy costs due to rising investment in AI. Georgieeva called for greater support for low-income countries to strengthen their fundamentals to withstand shocks.

The survey, conducted from Oct. 1 to 4, 2026, found that 44% were anticipating a conviction and 31% an acquittal, while 25% were unable to predict how the trial would end. The findings, which predate the withdrawal of three of the four impeachment charges against Duterte, could affect public perception of the proceedings. Online news reports and television broadcasts were cited as key sources of information about the trial. The poll also found significant public interest in the trial, with 65% of respondents highly interested in following the proceedings, and 44% considered the evidence presented by the prosecution as sufficient. The respondents also supported the Senate Impeachment Court’s decision to calculate the two-thirds voting requirement based on senators legally and factually able to participate, rather than the full 24-member Senate.
