GenZ Deserves Better than Undeclared Emer-GenZ: Tharoor Slams Govt
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has criticised the Modi government in Delhi, accusing it of creating a "war-like" deployment of 22,000 police and paramilitary across the city, 250 trains cancelled and 45 metro stations closed to prevent citizens from raising questions about the integrity of our elections. He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2015 post about the Emergency and urged the government to provide answers, not lathis; expression, not repression. Thararoor accused the government of creating an undeclared Emer-GenZ and suggesting that a government confident in its elections would welcome questions about them. The proposed protest against the CEC has led to heightened security measures in the national capital, with over 600 people with criminal records also detained.

Economists to pore over jobs data, Reserve Bank minutes
The Reserve Bank has targeted unemployment to help cool demand and reduce inflation. The bank's decision to raise the cash rate to 4.6% in September was more decisive than many expected, with all nine board members voting unanimously in favour of a hike. However, the jobless rate has risen faster than the central bank's forecast and is expected to remain at 4.5% in the December quarter. Despite this, Westpac economist Ryan Wells noted that while unemployment has been rising due to more people looking for work, cost-of-living pressures and interest rate rises have encouraged more people into the labour market. The Reserve Bank's minutes from the September meeting will provide more detail about what influences the decision to hike or hold.

Ben Roberts-Smith joins 600 veterans as Albanese marks Australia’s 25 years in Afghanistan
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commemorated 25 years of Australia's longest war in Afghanistan with a national commemoration at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The event was attended by 600 veterans, including Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith, who is facing five charges of war crime murder over alleged executions of Afghan detainees. Roberts-smith, who denies the allegations, attended the ceremony alongside fellow Victoria Cross winner Dan Keighran and former prime ministers John Howard, Tony Abbott, and Scott Morrison. The commemoration marked the 25th anniversary of Australia’s longest military engagement, with about 26,000 to 30,000 Australians serving under Operations Slipper and Highroad. The Taliban’ return to power in 2021 has left many veterans questioning the outcome of the two-decade campaign.

Single-Dose Drug Acoziborole Shows Promise Against Both Forms of Sleeping
A new laboratory study has found that acoziborole, a drug developed through a partnership led by the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, could potentially be a single-dose oral cure for the most common form of the disease, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. The study also found that Acozibol acts faster than its closest oral competitor, fexinidazole, which has been introduced for both forms of sleeping sickness. The significance of this finding lies in the unique epidemiology of sleeping sick. Unlike previous treatments for gambiense sleeping sickness, acozoborole is designed to be given as a single oral dose and could revolutionize treatment programs without the need for hospitalization or complex follow-up. However, a single dose strategy only delivers full elimination if it can be deployed against both subspecies of the parasite.

Thousands take part in pro-Palestinian rallies in European cities
Thousands of people gathered in London, Berlin and Dublin to protest against Israeli strikes on Gaza, three years after Hamas's October 7 attack. The demonstrators carried placards reading "End the genocide" and "Free Palestine". The Palestine Solidarity Campaign director, Aimee Shalan, argued that western sanctions against settler violence were insufficient. Despite a ceasefire a year ago, Israel has continued to strike Gaza daily, killing 1,450 Palestinians since then. London police arrested 20 people with placards supporting Palestine Action, banned under UK law. A counter-demonstration organised by Stop The Hate UK was organised by Jewish-led pro-Israel campaign group. In Berlin, a similar march by United for Palestine drew around 3,500 people, many of whom denounced Germany's arms exports to Israel.

Justice Department probes TV networks over Trump pool boycott
The US Justice Department is investigating whether television networks violated federal antitrust laws by boycotting covering the White House following its decision to pull the credentials of reporters from three news organizations, including CNN. The networks under investigation are ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News. This is part of a series of clashes between the Trump administration and major news organizations. The White House had previously blocked reporters from CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from entering the building, alleging these exclusions violated the First Amendment and retaliated against their coverage. All five television networks covering the president suspended coverage in solidarity and refused to provide replacement coverage.

The latest attack on the international airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, killed 12 people and injured over 300 others, according to civil aviation authorities. The dead include four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshi nationals, a Palestinian, a Jordanian, a Syrian and a Sudanese. The attack is expected to increase Saudi pressure on allies including the United States to provide military support for the kingdom. The airport has no military facilities. The Houthis claimed earlier in the week that killed three Saudis, including a pilot. The attacks on Saudi Arabia have rattled markets and the region.
