“Delay throws considerable doubt on credibility of sponsoring officer”: High Court quashes PSA order of Anantnag man at
The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has quashed a Public Safety Act (PSA) detention order against an Anantnag resident, Gulzar Ahmad Bhat, due to an unexplained delay between the alleged unlawful activities and the issuance of the preventive detention order. The High Court allowed a writ petition filed by Bhat to set aside the detention order passed by the District Magistrate, Anantlag on January 30, 2025. The police dossier alleged that Bhat had a history of criminal cases and was involved in an FIR registered in January 2024 under Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Despite these allegations, Bhat was not formally arrested in the UAPA case but released on a surety bond. The Court ruled that the prolonged and unexplained delays at multiple stages undermined the state's justification for preventive custody.

President Donald Trump has made a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to obtain diesel from Russia, a move seen as a significant reversal of US policy. This comes after he signed a Russia sanctions law aimed at reducing oil and gas revenues used in Russia's war against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it a "weak decision" and a "betrayal" of Ukraine. The deal comes as Hurricane Isaias makes landfall on the US Gulf Coast with powerful winds, dangerous flooding, and heavy rain. A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has hit Panama, causing significant damage and prompting evacuations. Despite economic sanctions and a naval blockade, Iran insists there will be no deal until the U.S. lifts these measures.

Mortgage warning with number of approvals at lowest level since 2023
The number of mortgage approvals in the UK has dropped to its lowest level since December 2023, with 54,900 mortgages approved for a house purchase in August, a decrease from 55,900 in July. This is below the average of about 60,100 over the previous six months. The Bank of England also found that remortgaging approvals decreased to 34,000 in August from 34,600 in July, suggesting that refinancing demand has softened. This decrease is attributed to affordability pressures and the impact of the Iran conflict on inflation and mortgage rates. Lucian Cook, head of residential research at Savills, said it marked the fourth month in a row that fewer than 60,000 mortgage approvals were approved.

Late-night meals and snacks linked to liver disease
US research has found that late-night eating may directly impact the liver, according to scientists from Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). The study, which examined around 200,000 people across three studies, found that eating after dinner or after bedtime increases the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (when fat builds in the liver) or cirrhosis. The study also found a 20 to 30% increase in all forms of liver disease among people reporting late-hour eating compared to those who did not. The lead author, Robert Wilechansky, suggested that confining calorie intake to several hours before bedtime might be beneficial.

Spains slow response to the crisis in Ceuta leaves teen migrants on streets - Daily Excelsior
Hundreds of teenage migrants waiting outside a church in Ceuta, Spain, hoping for passage to continental Europe or a spot in a shelter. Among them was a 17-year-old aspiring model from Morocco who crossed into Ceuta with around 80,000 others in what would become Spain's deadliest border crisis. However, within hours of meeting with Spain's visiting minister of youth, many were back on the streets and hillsides. The situation highlights Spain's slow response to the migration crisis in the territory. Thousands of minors reached Ceuta alone and, under Spanish law, are entitled to shelter, healthcare and education. The Spanish government's response to these issues has been criticised by experts as being an attempt to convince many of the remaining migrants to return home. The city's mayor, Juan Vivas, has urged national authorities to find a way to send the minors from Morocco home.
