SASSA warns grant recipients about a bank account move that won’t erase debt
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has warned grant recipients that changing bank accounts will not remove them from loans or other debts. The agency acknowledges that some recipients switch accounts due to existing financial obligations, such as loans and debit orders, but the debt remains. The move could lead to missed instalments and damage a recipient's credit record. SASSA has also noticed recipients changing their payment methods and banking details more often. The department urges recipients to understand their contractual obligations with financial institutions and service providers. It also warns that frequent changes to banking details can put grant payments at risk and cause delays.

Europe’s Trade Tensions With China Are Coming to a Head
The European Union and China are set to face off in a trade dispute, with European trade negotiators meeting in Beijing and a week later in Brussels to discuss industrial competitiveness with China. The region's trade deficit with China is running at 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) per day. European officials blame an undervalued Chinese currency and Beijing's state-controlled banking system for this imbalance. Chinese officials argue that the imbalance is due to Europe's increasing imports of electric cars, solar panels, batteries and battery chemicals. This has led to a surge in demand as Europe tries to combat climate change, adjust to the loss of Russian oil and natural gas, and the Middle East war. China's trade surplus reached a record $1.19 trillion last year.

Organizational AI use grows eightfold, yet governance gap remains: survey
Research from CPA Canada has found that the use of AI in Canadian organizations has increased by over eightfold in three years, outpacing the governance frameworks needed to support it. The study, based on responses from 5,000 Canadian CPAs, found that organizational AI use increased from five per cent in 2023 to 43 per cent by 2026, and nearly three-quarters of respondents now use AI at least weekly in their professional work. Despite widespread adoption, significant gaps in organizational readiness remain, with 67% of respondents reporting access to approved AI tools for professional use, only 45% reporting a formal AI policy and 34% implementing employee training or AI strategy. The findings reinforce the call for stronger federal AI safeguards, including a clear legislative path for AI governance.

Trump haters are more confident in election integrity, poll finds
A Gallup poll has found that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to have confidence in the honesty of US elections, despite President Donald Trump's control over Washington. According to the poll, 63% of Democrats have confidence, compared to 37% of Republicans and 35% of independents. This is the first time this year that Americans who disapprove of current US leadership are more confident in US elections than those who approve of it. This reflects widespread Democratic warnings about potential interference by President Donald Donald Trump in the midterm elections. In other countries, people who approve leaders often have higher confidence in election integrity.

Arkansas settles Monsanto PCB claims with up to $80 million earmarked for water quality
Arkansas has settled toxic chemical contamination claims with Monsanto and related companies Pharmacia LLC and Solutia, Inc. for up to $80 million. The state claims that the money must be used to protect water quality after years of alleged damage tied to industrial chemicals that remained in use for decades before they were banned. Attorney General Tim Griffin stated that Arkansas could collect anywhere from $32 million to $85 million, with the final amount dependent on separate litigation. The settlement funds must be restricted and used for water-quality purposes. Arkansas designates any settlement money for water quality work. These stories cover similar battles over toxic chemicals in water supplies and who pays to clean them up.

Here's the latest sticker shock: Borrowing for a mortgage -- or a car
Caroline Goldstein, a mother-of-one from Cleveland, experienced sticker shock when she borrowed for a new home due to rising mortgage costs. Mortgage rates have hit their highest level in almost three years, making buying a home impossible for many people at a time when housing prices are also high. This comes as bond markets have surged to their highest in decades, pushing up all types of interest rates paid by consumers, including loans for homes, cars, and higher education. The Federal Reserve recently raised interest rates, which are expected to continue increasing after the war with Iran increased inflation fears. This could delay future big purchases and make households more reluctant to borrow.
