Earth-Abundant CFTS Solar Cells Simulated to Reach 25.52% Efficiency
A team of researchers in India has developed a realistic path towards high-efficiency solar cells using copper iron tin sulfide (CFTS), one of the most abundant and least toxic absorber materials available. The study combined hands-on device fabrication with detailed numerical modeling to achieve a theoretical ceiling of 25.52% efficiency under standard test conditions. The CFTS/CdS heterojunction cell achieved a measured efficiency of 5.23% and a theoretical maximum of 25%. The study also identified which material and structural parameters need to change to close this gap. CFTS contains no toxic cadmium or indium, and requires no indium or gallium, elements so scarce in the Earth’s crust that impose hard limits on terawatt-scale deployment. The experimental side of the work used chemical spray pyrolysis, one of cheapest and most scalable thin-film deposition techniques in photovoltaic toolbox, as well as SCAPS-1D, a one-dimensional solar cell simulator developed at Ghent University. The simulation was calibrated against real devices and used to capture the physics of the real-world junction.

HSBC maintains its Buy rating with a target price of Rs 2,200, a 27% increase from Friday's close of Rs 1,737.80. The company forecasts a 19% year-on-year EBITDA growth in Q2 and keeps its FY27 EBITD estimate at the top end of management guidance. EBITda from overseas operations is expected to nearly triple to Rs 750 crore. HSBC's Buy rests on resilient earnings, diversification across the portfolio, and easing concession concerns. Gold gains as October Fed rate hike prospects fade

Spot gold was up 0.4% to $4,158.17 per ounce, while US gold futures for December delivery rose 0.6% to reach $4.186.40. The Fed raised its benchmark overnight interest rate by 25 basis points to the 3.75-4.00% range last month, marking its first rate increase in three years. Traders now see a 22% probability of a Fed rate hike for October, down from 64% a week ago, while still pricing in an 87% increase in December. Meanwhile, Yemen's government announced a major military campaign to recapture areas controlled by the Iran-backed Houthis.

McDonald’s refutes reports of using AI to set menu prices in the US
McDonald's has refuted reports that the fast-food giant is using machine-learning algorithms to set menu prices in the US and some global markets. The company stated that franchisees independently set menu price at their restaurants. However, it stated that AI does not set the price of a Big Mac or any other menu item. McDonald's does not use dynamic pricing and provides franchisees with tools, resources, research and recommendations to help them make informed decisions. The firm's pricing recommendation tool provides restaurant-specific recommendations and does not change prices based on customer willingness to pay. However it does not automatically set prices in real-time or at different hours during the day.

Dollar holds firm as French fiscal woes keep euro on back foot
The dollar index, which measures the US currency against six major units, rose to a 17-month high on Monday amid concerns about a Federal Reserve rate hike due to soft US jobs data and France's fiscal issues. The euro was at $1.1246, marking its lowest level since May 2025 after four consecutive weekly declines. Concerns over France's debt levels and political gridlock ahead of the election also dampened the euro's value. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was at 5.262%, below the 24-year high it touched last week. Traders are now pricing in a 78% chance of the US central bank holding rates steady in October, down from 36% a week earlier. However, they still expect a hike in December and another two in the first half of 2027.
