Gasoline and oil prices continue to rise on Middle East violence

Concerns about the Middle East led to a sharp selloff in U.S. stocks. The global benchmark, Brent crude, settled at $97.92 a barrel in London, up about 1% on day and up 1.7% from its Sept. 4 close of $96.28 a barrel.

A study by the University of Auckland has found that not all of Auckland's traffic pollution is from vehicle exhaust pipes. Road dust was more strongly linked to PM ₁ ₀ levels than pollution from vehicle exhausts. Heavy vehicles, those weighing over 3.5 tonnes, were identified as a significant contributor to this pollution. The findings suggest that non-exhaust emissions, which are often caused by traffic, can have serious health effects and have been linked to cardiovascular and respiratory problems, including increased hospital admissions in New Zealand. Policy responses could include better containment of soil and loose material near roads, improved management of road Dust, and targeted controls on heavy-vehicle movements at pollution hotspots.
