Scientists in South Dakota may have found new signs of "dark matter", an invisible substance that is said to bind the universe. The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment, conducted deep beneath the Black Hills of South Dakota, used a tank of liquid xenon to create an unusual particle reaction that may be linked to "dark energy". The researchers have not yet called this a confirmed detection. This is the closest scientists have come to uncovering the universe's most elusive form of matter. The experiment was run by an international team of 250 scientists and engineers from 38 institutions and was designed to test if a hypothetical dark matter particle reacted with a xenon atom to produce two flashes of light at a specific energy level. The findings were presented at the 2026 TeV Particle Astrophysics conference in Japan.
