Equinor’s Namibia Entry Signals Rising International Interest In The Orange Basin
Norwegian energy company Equinor has agreed to acquire a 17.4% interest in Namibia's PEL 90 exploration license, marking its first upstream entry into the country and its first expansion into a new oil-producing market since Argentina in 2017. The deal signals a growing international interest in the country's offshore oil and gas potential, particularly in the Orange Basin where major discoveries have attracted leading global energy companies like Chevron, BP and TotalEnergies. A planned exploration well on PEL 91 in 2026 is expected to be a key test of the license's prospectivity and could determine the pace of future investment in Namibibia's emerging petroleum sector. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Whistleblower faults university probes
A former Justice Department lawyer, Haley Van Erem, has accused a task force created to combat antisemitism of pushing for settlements with Ivy League universities despite government investigations being rushed and incomplete or failing to establish legal violations by the schools. The complaint alleges that investigations into some of the nation's most prestigious academic institutions were designed to strong-arm the schools into agreeing to deals for political gain. The task force was launched by the Justice Department under then-Attorney General Pam Bondi in February 2025 and was marked by procedural irregularities, predetermined outcomes without factual or legal support, and disregard for the law and Constitution. Van Ereme, who spent nearly a decade working in the Justice Dept.'s Civil Rights Division before being involuntarily assigned to HHS to work on the Title VI investigations into the universities, left the department in May 2025.

Aid workers should never be a target
World Humanitarian Day commemorates the 350 people who died in 2025 while assisting people in conflict, disaster, and crisis. Last year, 350 aid workers were killed, marking the second highest death toll since the Aid Worker Security Data Base was established in 1997. Gaza remained the deadliest context for aid workers, accounting for 186 deaths, with 68% of whom being killed due to aerial bombardment. Sudan saw a record 71 aid workers killed, mostly from small arms fire. Other highly insecure contexts included Ukraine, Ethiopia, Syria, Haiti, Chad, and Cameroon. There are currently over 252 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and protection, 13 million more than when the 2026 Global Humanitarian Overview was launched. The Irish Government will highlight the humanitarian consequences of ongoing conflicts during its European Council presidency. FIFA's chief operating officer, Kevin Lamour, left the organization following allegations that Gianni Infantino's plan to sell stakes in a company to run the World Cup to private investors deceived FIFA's administration.

Chinese firm lands booster in reusable rocket milestone
Chinese startup LandSpace has successfully landed the first stage of its Zhuque-3 rocket, joining SpaceX and Blue Origin as the only private companies to successfully land an orbital-class booster. This achievement narrows China's gap with the US in reusable rockets. The ability to return, recover and reuse a booster is crucial to reduce cost and make it easier to put satellites into orbit. The success of this landing is expected to boost investor confidence as LandSpace prepares for a listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's tech-focused STAR Market. LandSpace plans to reuse a recovered first-stage booster in the next six months, laying a foundation for future high-frequency and low-cost commercial launches.

Analysis-Japan has few answers as bond rout puts fiscal plans at risk
Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, has limited options to combat a bond rout that could push debt financing costs above government estimates. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has warned of the risk of inflation overshoot, which could warrant an early rate hike. The benchmark 10-year yield is on the verge of hitting 3% for the first time since the mid-1990s, raising concerns about the country's debt pile and inflation risks from the Middle East war. The surge in yields is a critical test for Takaich's economic strategy, which rests on the assumption that economic growth will outpace long-term borrowing costs without jeopardising fiscal stability. The government has ruled out spending caps on requests for strategic growth sectors in next year's budget, a move that could force more debt issuance.
