Tinubu will deliver permanent UN Security Council seat for Nigeria — Jimoh Ibrahim
Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu's ability to secure a permanent seat for Nigeria on the United Nation Security Council. Ibrahim stated that Tinubus has consistently advocated for reforms that would guarantee Africa, particularly Nigeria, a permanent place on the council. He also stated that the absence of any African country from the council’s permanent membership was unfair and remained a major concern for him. The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members: China, France, Russia, the UK, and the United States, each possessing veto power over substantive resolutions. Despite challenges, Ibrahim expressed optimism that ongoing negotiations would eventually lead to reforms.

Polish president vetoes bills that would have improved rights of same-sex couples
Polish President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed two bills that would have improved the rights of same-sex couples in Poland. The bills would have included “cohabitation contracts” for couples living together and would have allowed two adults to enter into an agreement over issues such as joint property rights, access to medical information and burial. The legislation had support from across the governing coalition, including the conservative PSL party. However, nationalist President Nawrockhi, an ally of the nationalist opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), said the bills went too far and would lead to the loss of the special status of marriage. The government would need a three-fifths majority to overturn the veto, but this is unlikely due to opposition parties' opposition.

Mapping China’s Evolving Approach to Seismic Risk Management
A study by Risk Sciences has reviewed Chinese research on seismic risk management, using bibliometric analysis and knowledge graph visualization to map the field's progress and changing areas of interest. The study examined literature related to famine relief, seismic riskmanagement, earthquake disaster management, seismic resilience, and earthquake resilience. It found that modern seismic risk Management has expanded to include disaster prevention, emergency response, reconstruction, insurance, risk assessment, logistics, rescue, and collaborative governance. The researchers suggest that future research should not separate seismic risk from seismic resilience and focus on how affected systems recover and adapt. The work was supported by the Scientific Research Fund of the Institute of Engineering Mechanics, China Earthquake Administration, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

'The Odyssey' is the epic only Christopher Nolan could make — and thank Zeus he did
Christopher Nolan has adapted Homer's epic epic, The Odyssey, a saga of gods, monsters, reunions, and retributions. The film is praised for its restrained approach to the story by Nolan, a filmmaker known for his preference for realism and restraint. Despite some expectations, the film is made to get butts in seats and keep them there for nearly three hours. The main character, Odysseus, is played by Matt Damon, who would otherwise have been miscast for this role. Despite this, the adaptation has been praised for bringing the story into life with a high level of detail.

Republican campaigns see immigration as a winning issue for midterms
Republican campaigns are focusing on immigration enforcement as one of their top campaign issues in the upcoming midterms, according to an NPR analysis of advertisement data from firm AdImpact. The data indicates that Republicans are spending more on immigration than Democrats, spending more money and running more ads than Democrats. Since the start of the year, Republicans and their allies have run nearly 300 ads nationwide about immigration, compared to 62 from Democrats. The most expensive was a $928,000 ad buy in the Michigan governor's race, funded by the MAGA KY PAC, a political action committee set up to defeat Republican Rep. Thomas Massie. The study also found that immigration was a winning issue for Republicans in the 2024 elections, with themes like increasing border security and reducing crime. Most of the ads have run during the primary season, with over 90% of seats up for grabs in gubernatorial, House and Senate races considered safe for one party or another.
