NATO chief may have to match his made-for-Trump sales pitch to keep a summit on the rails :: WRAL - People
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has been trying to keep the United States anchored to the world's largest military alliance, despite threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon it. This comes ahead of a summit in Turkey in which he has been criticized for criticizing NATO allies for spending too small on defense compared to America's defense spending. Despite Rutte's flattery and efforts to counterbalance this, Trump remains unsatisfied by some NATO allies' refusal to join the Iran war without consulting them. Despite these efforts, he suggested he might have skipped the summit if it were not being hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The stakes for the summit, which also includes the number of troops, warships, aircraft and drones it would provide if one of its allies comes under attack, are high. Despite this, both Rutte and his predecessor, Jens Stoltenberg, have dedicated significant resources to keep America within their alliance. The Pentagon recently announced it was planning to reduce troop numbers and increased drone flights near military bases in multiple countries.

Suspected space junk washes up on north Queensland beach - United States
Authorities are investigating a growing cluster of suspected space debris that has been washing ashore on Forrest Beach, north Queensland, near Ingham. The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) and Queensland Police Service (QPS) were called to the beach on Friday afternoon and confirmed that multiple hazardous objects were located on the beach. The beach was closed and a declaration was made under the Public Safety Preservation Act, which has since been revoked. The National Emergency Management Agency believes the objects are likely to be from a rocket launch. Emergency services have secured three objects overnight and are working out a removal and storage plan, while the Australian Space Agency is working to determine the nature of the debris and its origin. The race to unlock hundreds of billions to pay for life on a hotter planet
The UK is facing its third major heatwave of the year, highlighting the extent of the country's lack of adaptation to climate change. Developing countries currently require an estimated $310 billion to $365bn a year to adapt to the climate change, but currently receive only a fraction of this funding. Foreign aid cuts by wealthy governments including the US, UK and France are threatening what little funding is available. The $14bn Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the world's largest source of climate finance for developing countries, are urging private investors to direct some of their trillions of dollars towards climate adaptation. CIF uses public funds to attract larger sums from private investors, claiming it mobilises around $10 for every $1 it invests in clean energy, and $3-4 for $1 invested in nature and climate adaptation. The World Bank is also looking to bring more private investors into climate adaptation, with the aim of scaling up existing public finance models with public-on-finance models.
